From pilots and ground operations to aircraft maintenance engineers, professionals across the sector rely on a common language of standardized aviation terminology to perform their duties. Recognizing this critical need, the Vietnam Aviation Academy (VAA) has developed its specialized Aviation Terminology Programme. This program equips students and future air traffic control officers (ATCOs) with the ability to use industry-standard terminology in accordance with international practices, preparing them for the demanding aviation environment.
While the program supports international-standard aviation workforce as a whole, its core focus centers heavily on the high-stakes world of air traffic control. For ATCOs, building a strong foundation in aviation terminology is not only an academic requirement but also an operational necessity. To make this specialized vocabulary training truly effective, modern aviation education moves far beyond traditional textbook memorization by reaching two powerful, data-driven approaches: Competency-Based Training and Assessment (CBTA) and Evidence-Based Training (EBT).
Learning beyond memorization via CBTA
Instead of forcing learners to simply memorize exhaustive lists of aviation terms, CBTA shifts the focus toward the real-world skills ATCOs need to use those terms effectively under pressure. In a CBTA-style course, trainees practice using precise vocabulary within highly realistic operational scenarios. Rather than reviewing words on a page, students are pushed to deploy standard ICAO phraseology while managing traffic during heavy congestion or resolving a critical runway incursion. The core goal is to build long-term competence and operational confidence rather than short-term familiarity.
Operational reality via EBT
Evidence-Based Training (EBT) ensures that classroom activities are tightly aligned with real operational challenges and industry safety reports. EBT encourages instructors to analyze actual aviation data and prioritize training for high-risk or high-frequency scenarios. For example, if global safety data reveals that miscommunication during taxi instructions frequently leads to airfield incidents, the training curriculum will heavily emphasize taxi-related terminology and airport layout phraseology. This responsive model ensures that trainees master the exact language required to navigate the highest-risk situations they will inevitably face in the control tower.
Competency-sased assessment
To guarantee that these upcoming professionals are genuinely ready for the field, the assessment structure is designed to evaluate practical, real-time performance rather than theoretical written knowledge alone. Trainees are evaluated directly on how confidently, accurately, and correctly they apply aviation terminology within simulated ATC environments. Evaluation criteria include total communication clarity, phraseology accuracy, situational awareness, and the ability to collaborate smoothly with pilots and other controllers. By combining these rigorous CBTA and EBT principles with practical industry applications, the curriculum successfully graduates highly skilled, internationally competent air traffic controllers who are truly prepared to safeguard the skies
